Movie recommendations wanted
Well guys, I've seen almost every movie so I'd like to see what y'all want me to watch. I won't watch two types of movies: chick flicks and boring films. By boring I mean no good plot, bad character development, etc, etc., you know. I love Kung Fu, action, sci-fi, good dramas... cool?
Give me some movies and I'll either rent 'em, buy 'em bootleg 'em (no I won't, piracy is bad) but I'll figure out a way to watch it. Let me know.

Have you checked out Womb Raider, or any of the Buffy The Vampire Layer series?
October 20th, 2009 - 11:19
Breach
Boondock Saints
The Great Escape
Time Bandits (have to be in a weirs mood for this one)
All of the above are good but you’ve probably seen a couple. The Great Escape and Breach are 2 of my favorites.
October 20th, 2009 - 11:26
Have you seen Memento, or were you too young to dig it when it came out in 2000?
October 20th, 2009 - 12:35
Check out THE GRIFTERS w/John Cusack — a great and oft-forgotten drama from the early 90s. There’s a really interesting indie Sci-Fi movie called PRIMER that came out a few years back — it’s a mind-bender. THE LOOKOUT with Joseph Gordan-Levitt, SEXY BEAST with Ben Kinsley, and SHATTERED GLASS with Peter Sarsgaard are all dramas that are worth it as well. Can’t help you with Kung-Fu other than those great Stephen Chow pics.
October 20th, 2009 - 22:34
Old Boy.
A violent, shocking, and unpredictable Korean movie about a guy looking for and seeking revenge against whoever kidnapped him and held him prisoner for 15 years.
The movie won awards at the Canne Film Festival.
October 21st, 2009 - 05:17
Battle Royale!
October 21st, 2009 - 05:57
Duck You Sucker
IMDB: “An IRA explosives expert on the run in Mexico meets an amoral Mexican bandit; together they get drawn into the Mexican revolution.”
Le Mans
Steve McQueen drives really fast cars and there are crazy (and realistic) crash scenes…need I say more
Elling (Norweigen with subtitles)
A really funny and kind movie about two middle aged guys coping with mental illness. Plenty of sex jokes too.
El Aura (Argentina)
A really suspenseful heist movie.
Enjoy!

Maybe you could find some fresh ideas on Jinni (http://www.jinni.com ) – search by mood, plot, style… I don’t think “not boring” is an option though, unfortunately.
October 21st, 2009 - 09:56
Best movie of the year: Moon (with Sam Rockwell).

“Let the right one in”
super rad Swedish vampire Movie
October 21st, 2009 - 12:47
It’s an oldy, but a goody. “In Harms Way”. Directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and a cast of stars. Not a typical “Wayne” film. It’s set in the Pacific during WWII.
One of my favorite films.
October 21st, 2009 - 13:52
“Cannibal! The Musical”
Watch it, and then watch the commentary where the filmmakers get drunk while watching the movie.

(ps, we miss you in Portland, Channing)
October 21st, 2009 - 15:51
Channing, These are some of my favorites, that you may not have seen.
True Romance, Tarantino’s first film.
Billy Elliott.
12 Angry Men: old school Henry Fonda film.
Street Fight: Documentary about the nasty mayoral race in Newark, NJ.
The Station Agent.
The Visitor.
The Staircase (2003): this is the most intense documentary of all-time, IMO.
Hopefully you have Netflix because that’s the only place you’re going to find these awesome movies.
Go Suns!

I like a lot of peoples’ picks:
Old Boy – It’s quite the movie adventure, super intense movie. Best revenge plot ever.
The Staircase (it’s on iTunes) – Agree it’s one of the best documentaries. It’s a must see.
Some of my recent favorites:
Diving Bell and Butterfly – great soundtrack and cinematography is outstanding, story based on true life.
Away We Go – Thought it was going to be stupid, turned out hilarious (i never find movies funny either) and poignant coming of age movie.
October 24th, 2009 - 10:13
I second True Romance, if you havent seen it (Chrisitian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldham, Val Kilmer, James Gandolfini etc…) Great Movie!
“It aint white boy day, is it?”
Wild at Heart – Nicholas Cage & Laura Dern
Good luck in Phoenix! We’ll be keeping an eye on you from PDX.
October 24th, 2009 - 14:09
Serenity. It’s a scifi movie made in 2005. It ain’t cheesy at all.
October 26th, 2009 - 11:24
Chocolate – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183252/
It’s an amazing Thai martial arts film. You can get it on Netflix. Check out the outtakes and the extras about the making of the film… it’s crazy!!
P.S. Sad that you’re not in Portland anymore, but hope Phoenix is treating you well!
October 27th, 2009 - 11:03
The Hidden. An action/sci-fi flick from the 80’s. A hidden gem, in my opinion.
October 27th, 2009 - 11:42
netflix B.I.K.E.

October 27th, 2009 - 20:20
I’m sitting at home, watching the 1st BLAZER game this season, and SAD that you are not there!! BUT even more bothered, that you are NO LONGER on the commercials… and the MEDIA day where you were “Making Hits”… is now HOWARD, and he’s NOT funny like you,.. it was like he was reading a script….. No one will replace you in PDX!!! Even though your stay here in Portland was SHORT, you will ALWAYS fit in with KPW!!!
My family will be cheering you on for the SUNS!!
October 27th, 2009 - 21:53
You mentioned in another post you were a big Tarantino fan. Have you ever watched Chow Yun-Fat in City on Fire? It heavily influenced Reservoir Dogs. (Some would say QT stole from it.) It’s pretty intense.
Have you ever seen the original Cape Fear with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum? It’s absolutely sinister. Robert Mitchum reminds me of Hannibal Lecter, so silent and still – you think he’s capable of absolutely anything.
Someone else mentioned Steve McQueen. How about his movie Bullitt? One of the best car chase scenes ever through the streets of San Fran, and of course, McQueen did all his own driving. The cinematography reminds me of a Michael Mann movie – all grays, whites, and blues. You can pause any scene and it looks like a beautiful photograph.
And if you want something completely different, just in time for Halloween, try the old silent movie The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It’s trippy. Check out some stills from it and you’ll get the idea: http://tinyurl.com/yjva6s5
And like KD said, we miss you in Portland, Channing. Good luck with the Suns.
October 28th, 2009 - 00:11
I’ve read some of the other movies you’ve liked so I think you’ll like these:
Old Boy – this guy is the ultimate bad ass, definitely action-packed and original.
The Host – funny and creepy monster movie.
Hot Rod (if you dig Andy Sandberg’s Digital Shorts on SNL then you’d love this)
Zombieland – the style of movie incredible and it’s absolutely hilarious!
Revolutionary Road – you’d have to be in the mood for this one. It’s incredible! Fantastic script and characters but definitely not a “feel good” movie.
Channing, I really hope you’re doing well in Phoenix, we miss your awesome personality here in Portland!

Hey Channing,
Not sure if you saw this but we conducted a poll recently that included you. My goal is to someday make your “links” section. Anyway, best of luck in Phoenix. Nice to finally see an Ex-Cat with the Suns. Doesn’t happen enough.
October 30th, 2009 - 10:11
Hey Channing
A good one from a few years back is The Weatherman starring Nicolas Cage. It’s kind of depressing but in a real life kind of way. I think it has some great character development too, it’s actually a character driven plot. One of my favorites and really underrated.
October 30th, 2009 - 13:29
Sympathy for Lady Vengance is a Korean Film but saw it on SunDance channel. It’s kind of creepy and funny at the same time. Same director as Oldboy which is also really good.

Sugar. Great baseball movie – you will love it Channing!!
November 1st, 2009 - 20:39
“JCVD” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme is a great film, if you haven’t seen it you should check it out if you don’t mind reading some subtitles. It has a great plot and it is nothing like any movie JCVD has done before. It is one of my favorite movies.
November 2nd, 2009 - 21:37
Sugar: about a minor league baseball player, themes of immigration and racism and the minor league system.
Half Nelson: about a middle school teacher with a drug problem and a soft spot for his students. Great film.
Pan’s Labyrinth: one of the most terrifying yet uplifting stories of brutality and fantasy, set in revolutionary Spain.
Goodbye Solo: amazing, amazing film about a sad old guy who hires a taxi driver from Senegal to drive him to the middle of nowhere, turn around and don’t look back. Check my blog entry on this film, and be sure to see it: http://couriernewculture.blogspot.com/2009/07/goodbye-solo.html
Blood Simple: one of the Coen brothers’ early films, much along the lines of “No Country For Old Men.”
P.S. Congrats on a great start to the season and finding a great fit in Phoenix. Many of us in Oregon are so happy for you.
November 3rd, 2009 - 16:44
Hi Channing,
If you like noir, check out Brick. It’s a really well done detective story.
Ok, the movie recommendation was just an excuse to leave a comment to say how happy I am to see you doing well in Phoenix. I wish the playing time and role would have worked out here in Portland, but if not, I’m pleased to see you doing well and doing well for a team that I like to root for (when not playing the Blazers).
Again, great start to the season. I’m very happy for you. Keep it up!
-Jason

November 10th, 2009 - 13:56
If you like a movie that will make you feel better and more positive after watching it, there are 2 that come to mind. Simple Life of Noah Dearborn and Seabiscuit. The characters in these 2 films overcome all sorts of obstacles in their pathways with the help of God and their God given abilities to improve not only themselves but the world around them. (And Seabiscuit is based on a true story) I really recommend these these 2 movies, realizing I am older than a lot of the others in this blog, and Channing seems to like a lot of action movies (nothing wrong there), There is so much in these 2 movies about life simplified. By the way, Channing, I was very disappointed that you couldn’t stay w/the ‘Blazers, and I believe you will be sorely missed both on the Game floor, in the locker room and in practice. I live in the Portland west metro area, love Basketball and watch the Blazers or NBA as finances will now allow. It is good to know you are “home” and in Phoenix, but the people back home in Oregon do miss you and your attitude. Later.
November 10th, 2009 - 20:03

“Next” is the name of the Nic Cage movie Justin Frost above is referring to. adapted from a short story by Phillip Dick (Minority Report, BladeRunner, Paycheck, Total Recall, etc.) All of these movies are good sci-fi fare
