Grant's Philly Cheesesteak out on 153rd & Sandy. It's well worth the drive. I think it's the best sandwhich outside of Philly. The sweet peppers are actually sweet, the meat is cooked to order and is very tasty. You can have cream cheese, provologne, cheze whiz, and chedder. Provologne and cheez whiz are my favorites.

i love that you are somwhat of a foodie, channing. someone else mentioned Bunk Sandwiches, and that is definitely my vote for best sandwich in pdx.

my favorite restaurants in portland all have some outdoor seating:

1. ken's artisan pizza
2. pok pok
3. por que no

also, there is a nice thai place on NE Broadway called Sweet Basil with a really pleasant backyard patio.

Pretty much this post made me hungry so I had to throw in my two cents.New Seasons makes a really good steak sandwich. It's not available all the time, but if you're ever in there and they're making it definitely give it a try.

The absolute best steak sandwich in Portland is at Grant's Cheesesteak on NE Sandy and 153rd. It is the bomb!! WAaaayyy better than the brisket sandwiches at the General Store in West Linn (the only other place I've had that others mentioned) I just get the original with provelone and all the peppers, (gotta get the peppers)

You have to eat this during the off-season. It's probably about 2K calories.

Channing,

The dude who made you that tri-tip is awesome! I have had many a great sandwich at that place. If you want to try the veggie thing, try his portabella sandwich. It's good. Clint is also a pretty good baller / golfer. Tell him Dave says hi next time you stroll down...

Two choices Channing....

Get yourself a bbq and make your own awesome dishes with some friends....or go to the general store in West Linn and order a briscuit. Its a hardware store, but they sell Trager pellet fired bbq's and will cook food right there for you. $5 and you get an awesome sandwich. Take exit 6 off 205, go south, right at the stop sign by the Chevron, down the road a half mile on your right.

Although he doesn't have a great patio, my buddy John owns a great place called Meat Cheese Bread. It's on about 14th and SE Morrison. John used to be in charge of the sandwich menu at Grand Central Bakery and he is a true "sandwich artist". Also, if you get there early enough to grab an outside table, The Bonfire on 28th and SE Stark is great.

You can't beat Rip City Grill. Burgers are very good, steak sandwich is awesome, and the tri tip salad is the best thing I've ever eaten. We have to do something about getting him to open for a couple hours on the weekends. I want to bring my friends so they can stop listening to me talk about it.

One of the best patios is the VQ (which you obviously already know about). Another great outdoor eating area is the back patio at Bernie's Southern Bistro on Alberta. Good food, great drinks, and an awesome back courtyard.
