Summer Venues and Steak Sandwiches

I know it's summer and I've been out and about but now that the weather is set to be nice in Portland for the next few months, I want to know your opinions about the best places to eat outdoors.

Plus, I have a challenge for Portland restaurants: I have now had THE best steak sandwich from Rip City Grille and I want to know if anyone thinks they have one that can compete. I could eat this sandwich every single day and be totally happy with it. Anyone got something better?

  1. The mole chicken nachos at Sante Fe on NW 23rd are killer, fun to sit on the sidewalk and people watch. Also, the outdoor deck at Goose Hollow Inn (1927 SW Jefferson) for the best Reuben on the planet (for real).

  2. Try Tribute’s off 23rd and NW Kearney, just down from Santa Fe. The chicken Philly Cheese with the hot sauce is quite nice.

  3. Channing,
Let me know if you find any great places to eat outdoors, Guinnes (Our French Bulldog) loves to dine out with us and dog friendly outdoor patios are a must.

  4. A food cart right across the Sellwood Bridge called “Garden State” on SE 13th and Lexington. Cheap and amazing. Order the Chicken Sandwich. I found it on here: http://www.sunset.com/food-wine/food-cart-recipes-portland-00400000039903/

  5. Tributes! Best sandwiches and great chilli cheese fries!

  6. Ron Toms out back for a drink or 5. Produce Row has a nice caged area too, and their sandwiches are pretty fabulous. I swear by Jim and Patty’s Coffee on Fremont too.

  7. Try “Giant Burger” in Lake Oswego. You can find it at 15840 Boones Ferry Rd. It’s really nothing special, but its a quality burger for a very cheap price. The Cajun fries rock, and they have a lot of different types of burgers i.e. guacamole, teriyake, cheese, nacho, and a beast called the stacker which has eggs and ham on it. Outdoor seating is pretty limited/bad, but I recommend getting the food to go and going down the street to nearby Waluga park.

  8. The best sandwiches in general come from Bunk Sandwiches on SE Morrison. Also check out the sandwiches at the brand new Laurelhurst Market on E Burnside across from Music Millennium.

  9. You should come and visit Top Burger in Camas Washington. They have the best fries around, and seriously the best milkshakes you’ll ever have. Also, I work there and I’m a huge fan!!!

  10. Tin Shed on NE Alberta and 14th serves delicious food and drink that is responsible, fresh and so yummy!
Also, Hopworks Urban Brewery on SE Powell and 29th. Outdoor seating isn’t spectacular, but beer flavorful with bar-like foods. Yum!

  11. In the interest of full disclosure, I work at this place, but I think you might enjoy the Black Rabbit Courtyard at the Edgefield in Troutdale. The building surrounding the Courtyard has been around for 98 years and was originally part of a county poor farm. The specials menu changes throughout the summer with the arrival of freshly harvested vegetables grown on the property. We also produce our own beer, wine, and spirits on the property if you are into that kind of thing.

I hope that didn’t sound too much like an ad. It really is a cool place to check out. There is a 3 par golf course, a spa with a soaking pool, and all kinds of little bars to check out. Anyway, I hope you have a great summer and I wish you the best next year even if you end up having to move to another team.

  12. Hit up the Harborside at the Marina if you haven’t already, it’s along the waterfront south of Waterfront Park. Great seafood

  13. One of the best patios is the VQ (which you obviously already know about). Another great outdoor eating area is the back patio at Bernie’s Southern Bistro on Alberta. Good food, great drinks, and an awesome back courtyard.

  14. You can’t beat Rip City Grill. Burgers are very good, steak sandwich is awesome, and the tri tip salad is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. We have to do something about getting him to open for a couple hours on the weekends. I want to bring my friends so they can stop listening to me talk about it.

  15. Although he doesn’t have a great patio, my buddy John owns a great place called Meat Cheese Bread. It’s on about 14th and SE Morrison. John used to be in charge of the sandwich menu at Grand Central Bakery and he is a true “sandwich artist”. Also, if you get there early enough to grab an outside table, The Bonfire on 28th and SE Stark is great.

  16. Two choices Channing….

Get yourself a bbq and make your own awesome dishes with some friends….or go to the general store in West Linn and order a briscuit. Its a hardware store, but they sell Trager pellet fired bbq’s and will cook food right there for you. $5 and you get an awesome sandwich. Take exit 6 off 205, go south, right at the stop sign by the Chevron, down the road a half mile on your right.

  17. Channing,

The dude who made you that tri-tip is awesome! I have had many a great sandwich at that place. If you want to try the veggie thing, try his portabella sandwich. It’s good. Clint is also a pretty good baller / golfer. Tell him Dave says hi next time you stroll down…

  18. The absolute best steak sandwich in Portland is at Grant’s Cheesesteak on NE Sandy and 153rd. It is the bomb!! WAaaayyy better than the brisket sandwiches at the General Store in West Linn (the only other place I’ve had that others mentioned) I just get the original with provelone and all the peppers, (gotta get the peppers)

You have to eat this during the off-season. It’s probably about 2K calories.

  19. Pretty much this post made me hungry so I had to throw in my two cents.New Seasons makes a really good steak sandwich. It’s not available all the time, but if you’re ever in there and they’re making it definitely give it a try.

  20. i love that you are somwhat of a foodie, channing. someone else mentioned Bunk Sandwiches, and that is definitely my vote for best sandwich in pdx.

my favorite restaurants in portland all have some outdoor seating:

    1. ken’s artisan pizza
    2. pok pok
    3. por que no

also, there is a nice thai place on NE Broadway called Sweet Basil with a really pleasant backyard patio.

  21. Grant’s Philly Cheesesteak out on 153rd & Sandy. It’s well worth the drive. I think it’s the best sandwhich outside of Philly. The sweet peppers are actually sweet, the meat is cooked to order and is very tasty. You can have cream cheese, provologne, cheze whiz, and chedder. Provologne and cheez whiz are my favorites.

  22. TASTE TICKLER!!!!!! 14th and Bway. You can get one before the game tonight!!!
