New Orleans

Most of the time when we go to New Orleans we stay in our nice hotel just looking outside, not really getting a chance to see the culture and history of the place. Well, recently I went to dinner with one of my eat-friends uncle (Uncle Bob). He took me out to one of the best restaurants I've ever been to -- from the bread to the meal itself, it was top notch. We went to Emeril's with him, his son, and his son's girlfriend. I met all of them last summer at my boy Jack Murphy's wedding in Hawaii.

Well, during the dinner, Uncle Bob was telling me so much history about Louisiana and what really happened during Katrina. It was seriously deep. I was thinking about how it's almost an afterthought about what went on, but there people will never forget. He also talked about the customs, history, and traditions. It was amazing to finally get out and see how southerners spend their nights. I figured out that Louisianans are about indulgence: eat good, drink good, and have a good time all the time.

I decided that this summer I'm gonna stop by and really enjoy the city so I'll keep you tuned for that installment of CFryes Favs.

  5. New Orleans is an American treasure and I’d say easily in the top 3 US cities (with NYC & SF). You should go over and visit the lower 9th ward to see if anything at all has been done to clean it up. I went 6 months after Katrina and it was a ghost town. Much of the city was a ghost town, in fact. As long as you’re there, you should also drive over to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to check it out. it was also utterly devastated; Most of it looked like Fallujah after US forces bombed the city. I’d never seen anything like it and it went on for more than 100 miles. It was my 2nd time there (first time was in 2000) and it was totally unrecognizable.

You should also go check out the bayous, which are pretty cool. There are alligators and everything. My girlfriend and I actually stayed in a cabin one night that basically fronted an alligator pond and you could feed the alligators from the front porch. It was a cabin at sort of an alligator farm and I’m pretty sure it’s designed more for kids, but I thought it was fun.

The area around Tulane University is beautiful. There is so much to see & do there…

Man I love it down there :-)

  6. we love you here in Portland!
GO BLAZERS! you should make a countdown for when the blazers would be in the playoffs!

  7. Just don’t leave Portland for New Orleans. I know it would be fun to play with CP3, but he is no Roy.

  8. Hi Channing,

Along the lines of hidden gems in NBA towns you have to check out…the next time you’re in Detroit, you should go Featherbowling at the Cadieux Cafe. It’s pretty much the only place you can do it in North America, and it’s a blast! It’s one of the things I miss the most about my hometown now that Portland’s home. Google it, and go, and I guarantee that you and anyone you take along will have a great time – from teammates to elderly aunts!
