Who’s up for kickball?
With all the traveling we've been doing, I've had plenty of time to think about what I'm gonna do this summer for a charity game in Portland and through it all I came up with a kickball game.
I don't know where it's gonna be yet and don't know what month, but I feel like it will be the best idea and way for kids and parents and everyone in the community to get out and have a great day for a good cause in Portland.
So let me know how you feel about it, where I should have it, and if you had to have one thing there (food, beer, roller coaster, etc.) let me know. I want my kickball day to be the best day in Portland every year.

Sounds like it would be a hoot!
What about Overlook Park? Seems like a good, open spot, right off the MAX lines and easily accessible from Portland and Vancouver.

Awesome idea! I’d totally love to come out and photograph the event since my photography skills surpass my athletic ability.
Your welcome to check my work out on my site.
Down in Sellwood on the waterfront might be a good place to have it.

Kickball sounds dope! I’m down for sure.
Any park with huge grassy fields seems good. Somewhere with a good amount of parking I’d think.
I’d say some food would be prime. Good ole BBQ or some pizza are always favorites.
I’ll be sure to post info on portlandallday.blogspot.com once you figure it all out.

Channing-
I am organizing the world record breaking attempt for longest kickball game. The event will be in Portland June 19. 20, and 21st at Overlook Park. We are doing it to benefit the Oregon Food Bank. We are trying to break the existing record of 25 hours, set by a bunch of folks (including Kyle Korver of the Utah Jazz) last year. I had emailed your foundation to get your participation, but at the time, we didn’t have a date set. We would love for you to be a part of our game!

Willamette Park in John’s Landing. Lots ‘o open space for roller coasters, BBQing and beer.
January 21st, 2009 - 13:58
C. Frye,
it’s a bit far, but Delta Park?
Got a bunch of fields out there.
You should host like a huge dodgeball tourney. With a bunch of teams and everything.
Get some prizes, registration, and stuff goin.
So that way people will put up some money to register, at the chance of getting some prizes (Blazers Tickets, Signed Gear, etc.)
And the money could go towards a charity around the area?
Or you could make the game completely free and get local groups to donate stuff for the kids and all ya know?
Maybe get some uniforms and shirts and gear dedicated for some of the youth?
Either way, be sure to keep us all posted with details, I’d love to be a part of it! You need any volunteers to help facilitate things, you know where to look. Holler!

One more thing- the email address for your foundation is not currently working.

I’m in. Somewhere in North Portland would be cool, there are tons of amazing parks. Penisula Park has a great rose garden, I guess its the only sunken English rose garden on the west coast. Plus there are lots of picnic tables and awnings…and a pool! Please don’t tell me I have to choose between food, beer, and a rollercoaster, that’s way too much pressure.
January 21st, 2009 - 14:11
Just don’t let sergio or rudy play, they’ll just show off their soccer skills.
January 21st, 2009 - 14:43
hey, i’m down to help. i think eastmoreland park would be a great place. if i remember correctly, they have like 3 softball fields that you can reserve. i’m not too sure on the pricing but the last time my fraternity reserved a spot at a park was approximately 100 bucks for the whole day. the place is near reed college and eastmoreland golf course so its in a nice area with plenty of parking space.

Hi Channing,
An annual kickball game sounds great! I remember seeing you at one of our kickball games last summer at Overlook Park and thought that it was so cool that an NBA player would come out and spend a day enjoying the portland summer life and taking part in the community.
Our kickball club would love to help out in any way we could, we already work hard in donating to various local charities throughout the season. We are called Oregon Kickball Club and could help with field rental, kickball equipment (balls, bases, etc.), promotion, etc. Send me an e-mail or go to oregonkickball.com and send the league an e-mail if interested.
Hope to hear from you!

Mr Frye,
I hear you’re looking for a kickball game. I started the first adult kickball league here in Portland. We also have dodgeball – we’ve done a couple of half time shows.
We have been around since 2003 and have the biggest and best kickball leagues around. If you’re looking for a game, I’d love to help you organize it. We are the best (and most fun) adult kickball players in the world or at least we like to think of ourselves that way.
Please let me know if I may be of assistance to you. Good luck tonight, kick some LeBron butt!!!!
Kind Regards,
Colleen Finn

hey man, sounds great. How about Irving park? Heart of North East Portland, lots of families around there, good space and right by some legendary bball courts… just saying.
January 21st, 2009 - 17:03
Sounds like a great idea. I would definitely include beer and allow dogs on site.
January 21st, 2009 - 19:05
Despite playing some soccer here and there, I find I can’t kick a ball during kickball to save my life. For charity though, I’d be in.
Someplace on the Max lines definitely makes sense. There is no shortage of places where 3+ baseball fields are available in Portland.
Beer and food should be able to help in the fund raising and would make it a great party. Gotta have fries…

Mud. You need mud.

Colonel Sumners at SE Belmont and 20th would be the way to go! In the summer it’s basically my living room. There’s an area for 4 Square, bathrooms (key!), and basketball courts. I’d love to see a BBQ, beer, and popsicles. Thanks!
January 22nd, 2009 - 13:43
Channing,
Col. Sumners Park is a good option if available. My pick would be that park on NE Fremont and 7th. It’s big and not overused. Necessary for your kickball game is a soundsystem blasting Thin Lizzy.
January 22nd, 2009 - 14:36
As a 23 year old I play kickball occassionaly with my friends and little kids. It is a blast. Just make sure that you have 4 or more diamonds to play on.
January 23rd, 2009 - 07:21
gotta be irving park. got to, got to, got to be irving park. there’s a reason terrell brandon, damon stoudamire and all the homegrown hoopers hold their events there. it is portland at our absolute best.
January 23rd, 2009 - 11:48
I used to rent Powell Park for my birthdays, great place. Mt. Tabor would also be a perfect spot. It is sort of crummy but Oak’s Park (if it is still around) has rollercoasters and has a few fields. Good luck! I’d definitely fly back to Portland for an event like that.
January 23rd, 2009 - 13:39
i say you rent a barge and we play on the barge in the middle of the river. It takes epic to another level.
January 25th, 2009 - 16:05
Beer! Then again, if kiddies will be a big part of it, then maybe just the food. In any case, this will rock. Have to have it in Laurelwood or somewhere else on the inner East side of Portland. Maybe even in North Portland.
January 25th, 2009 - 23:26
You should have VooDoo doughnuts sell doughnuts for spectators (and players) and have the proceeds go to the charity.
January 26th, 2009 - 02:05
Why not have the game at PGE Park? It’d be a throwback to the old Blazer Jam’s only with a twist, would be over the top, and it gives the game a high stakes feel.
Seriously, don’t you like the thought of passers by hearing the PA announcer saying “kicking lead off, he’s an Arizona Wildcat, and a portland native, SALIM STOUDAMIRE!!!!”
Make this happen!

Yo Frye-Guy,
Colonel Summers Park in SE. They already have a great kickball area and regular games: http://pdxpipeline.wordpress.com/2007/07/22/july-22-kickball-at-colonel-summers-park-530/
January 27th, 2009 - 18:44
Sounds like a great plan, keep promoting it, like I heard you do on The Fan, tonight
Doing food and like a tournament, and charging like 25 or 30 bucks for entry maybe, just some thoughts

Hey Channing –
Check out recesstimesports.com
They are a kickball (along with other sports) league in Portland.
Actually, they are one of the biggest dodgeball and kickball leagues in the world, pretty impressive to say the least.
I’m sure they could help you out with parks, sponsorships, equipment, etc. Not to mention all the parks they play at in Portland they have liquor licenses for.
Can contact Colleen (the president) at kickball@recesstimesports.com
Good luck. =0)
