Basketball Forum
We have been receiving several emails and posts from fans and members of Channing's youth camps who want to ask him basketball-related questions. Rather than respond to them individually, we're going to keep this post open specifically for basketball talk.
Submit your basketball questions on this post and Channing will reply to them on a weekly basis. Please keep in mind that this is not a venue for personal venting and, as always, please respect our youth readers.
Thank you.

Hey Channing,
I recently read your article in the Willamette Weekly, and quite frankly it made me sad. I’m a fan, I check on your blog every now and then, and I’m always excited when you get some playing time, but disappointed when you don’t perform. Reading your article you mentioned that you don’t see yourself a part of the Blazer’s roster a few years down the road from now… I’m sure that’s got to be an unnerving feeling, yet day in and day out, you show up for practices, you put your work in, you still seem so grounded in the team. Even if you’re not a star blazer, or even if you don’t see yourself as a blazer in the future, you play as if you’ll be a blazer for life. How do you keep yourself grounded and composed?
I mean, I’ve never heard anything in the media about, “Frye bitterly skips out on practice, due to inclement trade rumors” or anything like that… You must have a great sense of faith and a stronghold in something bigger than yourself.
Are you a Believer in Christ? Or any other faith? I know I’ve heard of some of your teammates being spotted in local church scenes around the Beaverton area. I was just wondering if you have a church yourself that you attend, or anything along the lines of that.
I know this isn’t a very basketball-y question, but hey isn’t it?
Half of the work you put on the court is a mental/heart thing ya know? And honestly how can an athlete put enough faith in themselves, who’s only human, if they don’t put much faith in something bigger than themselves.
Not trying to offend you C. Frye, just trying to provoke a little thought. Hope to hear a response from ya. Stay cool, and like always keep that level head of yours, and just give it your best. Whatever gets Cold, must get Hot.
A Blazers Fan,
Jessy Cho
P.S. See you at the Wizards game, Jan. 24, I’ll be the guy in the Rip City Rows dressed up as Spider-Man. If you throw down a hard one, point me out man. Haha much love.

Hi Channing!
Enjoyed the article on you in the Weekly. I really hope that you stay in Portland and get some playing time. You have so many fans here. Keep working hard and good luck!

As a die hard Portland fan I think it would be terrible for the team and city to loose you. I really do think the things you do off the court are just as important and I do think players like you brought back the fans that had given up on the JB’s. I don’t mean to sound like a freak but man I’m really hoping managment takes these things into consideration.

CFRYE, you are the type of player on and off the court that we have wanted for many years. If only you had 20 or 25 minutes on the floor. Many nights I hear how they gave other Blazers a chance to get in the groove of the game. I know your chance is coming and I hope it’s soon. My suggestion, stay with the Blazers. Show us all you have in the short time frame they give you. At the end of the last season you showed us your true game. We love to see you play your “A’ game, bring it on..

Channing! Love this post man, when will you reply to the Q’s? I’ve got a quick one for you here: How old were you when you first started balling? one more, were you ALWAYS the tallest kid in your age group, or did you have a freak growth spurt at some point?
I hope to see you with the Blazers for a VERY long time man! You are a great person and the kind of guy I want to point out to my kids every time you take the court or the camera pans to you. Plus, I don’t want to have to put away my #44 “Frye” Blazers jersey to collect dust anytime soon!!
January 6th, 2009 - 20:25
Channing,I adore you..
Please stay a Blazer.
You are the type of guy and player we really need here
January 8th, 2009 - 01:05
Channing….Wow…as frustrated as we are, I can only imagine how you are…so tonight you play 4 minutes…how are you supposed to get in a rythym? Part of the problem is on offense…its stangnant…no movement…tonight you ran the same play 4 times in a row, where rudy curls of a screen, and steve flares and hit some j’s….but besides that…NOTHING….Travis is not better than you at the 4 and got killed by Prince tonight….He couldn’t guard him at all…..and got lost to many times on D….Im not trying to bash your teammates, but these are strengths of yours that Coach needs to see. Rather than having the blazers react to the opponent, Nate needs to be proactive and play you at the four with Lamarcus or Joel at the 5 and let teams adjust accordingly.
Well we can only hope that the staff sees this soon.

Channing,
Just wanted to know that I attend your youth camps and am having a great time and learning alot….hope to see you soon there.

Mr. Frye,
I wanted to let you know how much you are valued in Portland and think what a quality player you can be if given the chance to show your stuff. I have a question for you…..Do you think that you could make the transition to the 3 and guard those players effectively?
January 11th, 2009 - 03:15
Channing, as a person you are awesome. I would love it if you could stay a Blazer. However, I understand that this is a business and the team needs to do what is best for them to win games. I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed you as a member of this great team and I wish you luck going forward.
P.S. The first guy who posted on here was kind of scary and stalkerish. That and many other people need to learn how to spell.

Okay, here are some answers to questions y’all posted last week. Feel free to add more and I’ll get to these weekly.
To Jessy, Really, I’ve come to the point where I believe all things happen for a reason and for me to step outside of the way I do things wouldn’t be a testament to everything I’ve worked so hard for. It’s not in my nature. So I keep myself grounded by busting my butt every single day, whether it be lifting, training, staying positive…
I usually stay away from religious topics because I don’t want to exclude anyone, but without my faith, I’d be nothing. You know? Every time I think things might not work out or something, I continue to trust and that gets me through. Through this time, I’ve not only gotten closer to myself and those around me, but my faith and trust have grown stronger. I truly believe I’m destined for greatness and without my faith I wouldn’t.
To saregister, I started in 2nd grade and I did it to make friends. I have always been very tall and it’s been pretty amazing being tall all my life.
To John, I think there are times when most players and most people don’t understand what’s going on in the season or behind the scenes, but the coach is just trying to do what’s best for the team. We’re professionals and we just have to be ready at all times and understand our role is to do what’s best for the team.
To Matt, to be honest it would be a tough transition. I’d have to adjust some things and my style. I think in some games and in some situations I could do it, but I’m comfortable in the paint, I love playing inside out. I think it would take like a year to adjust enough to transition to 3.
To Oscar, who emailed, I majored in Interdisciplinary Studies and if I wasn’t in the NBA, I’d be a high school coach.
Thanks to everyone for your support. It means a lot.

Dang Channing,
thanks for taking the time to respond.
I feel you man, ain’t asking for you to profess your faith or spirituality all over the internet, a man’s faith is his own.
And I completely agree with you, you are destined for greatness. Just remember ‘greatness’ is a fluid word.
Stay great buddy. In all things.
A fan,
Jessy Cho

Channing!
My question: Who do you connect most with on the team? Friend wise.
And I just like to add that, I think you deserve more minutes. I think if Nate gave you more of a chance (like he does Outlaw) you’d be in rythm more. Not bashing on Outlaw or anything, I’d just like to see the same respect for you. Your a great player and asset to this team, and I’d HATE to see you leave =(
Britt.

Channing! Everybody has a common theme on here and thats we wish to get you on the court more. So I have a question. (Hypothetical) So what type of system do you think would best fit your abilities that you see other teams running……(not the political awnser) I know you prepare for each team so they are scouted out and you have a feel. Would it be the New York system/ the triangle/ system that runs a lot of half court sets like avery johnson did in dallas.

Channing,
I was just wondering if you could tell me what summer camps you will be holding in the Portland area. My son attended your camp last year and we are hoping to attend again.
Thanks.

I was just wondering what you think of coach McMillan as a head coach. Do you think he does a good job? How is he compared to other coaches you’ve had? Because from the outside looking in it seems as though he doesn’t understand how to use the players we have as effectively as he could. I was just wondering your thoughts about this. Thanks.

Channing -
When I first moved to Portland, it was still during the era of the Jailblazers and I wasn’t much of a Blazers fan. In recent years, it seems the focus of the Blazers has been to recruit quality people, not just quality ball players. Does you think this is a conscious decision by the Blazers, or just a result of having a young team and growing together (instead of relying on veterans?)
I echo the sentiments of everyone here, that I’d hate to see you leave the Blazers, although it’s not something I like to think about. I have to admit even though I see your Media Day ad every single game, it still always cracks me up. You seem to be the most likable/down to earth cat on the roster, and even though you’re not on the floor every game, you’re still probably my favorite Blazer. I personally can’t support a team (no matter how many games they win) if the guys on the team don’t care about the fans or the community.
Wherever you are, you’ll be an assett ot the team and the community on and off the floor. Keep doing what you’re doing.

Good luck tomorrow night with LeBron!
See you at the Wizards.

Do you believe if you were given a larger role on this team that you would perform significantly better? I am a fan of yours and I know you won’t find a ton with more supportive fans for an underperforming player like yourself. I want you to be a contributor because you seem like you have the ability and probably have the right attitude. What’s the missing piece? I’d hate to see you ever leave Portland without a good chance for you to strut your stuff.
