Olympics

The opening ceremonies. Why were they so long? If it really cost $300M, spending that much money on an open was crazy, but it was tight.

I've been watching just about everything. Hopefully everyone's like me and figuring out what sports they like and what they don't. My girl and I don't always agree. I like fencing. She doesn't. But the men's beach volleyball is very interesting. Dalhausser was jumping so high. He definitely has hops and I wish USA the best.

Also, I don't know what you think, but Michael Phelps is the Tiger Woods of swimming because of what he's done for the sport. You know we're all going to see a lot more of swimming whenever he's doing it.

It's also exciting to see the Olympic basketball team play, especially because of Rudy against the rest of the world.

Tell me what you've been watching and what you think.

  1. I’ve been watching the Olympics constantly. To the point I’m not getting enough sleep- it’s addictive.

Phelps has definitely taken swimming, and the whole games, up a level (or many levels). Good stuff.

  2. Actually, the few games I’ve seen of it, Water Polo (both men’s and women’s) has been pretty interesting. It’s a combination of soccer and hockey, with a little bit of basketball (shot clock) thrown in for good measure.

But yeah, I’ve been watching most everything, and I do have to agree on the Tiger Woods / Michael Phelps comparison. Time will only tell if he can keep interest in the sport longer than just during the Olympics.

  3. Yep I’ve been watching just about everything too. I never knew handball and badminton can be so exciting..lol

  4. Well, I don’t mean to brag but I did mention Michael Phelps on your blog for best athlete and that was a while back. I am a huge swim
fan and have spent hours watching my kid swim from tyke to collegiate. I also love water polo (again same thing from the scorers table to on deck). Played tons of badminton and equestrian stuff in my day. Unfortunately, Oxygen is a crappy place to watch dressage and eventing. It is all good though and I was hooked after the track trials were here in Eugene. You should come down here in 2012 and check it out. It was a blast. I love the Olympics both summer and winter.

  5. that walsh/may beach volleyball team is amazing. 104 or what ever games on without a loss.. thats just crazy good

  6. Cuz,

Track & Field is my sport and was disappointed that Tyson Gay did not make the finals. I wanted to see the “top 3″ in the world against eachother (Powell, Bolt & Gay).

However, Usain Bolt needs to change his name from “Lightning” to “INSANE” Bolt ! !

I’m still amazed at his 100m victory. I’m trying to figure out how on earth he “shut down” at 80 meters and coasted to a 9.69 World Record. AMazing, to say the least. Suppose he’d have kept running? 9.5 ?

I believe he is entered in to 200m as well and I can’t wait to see that one. If he’s on the 4 x 200 meter relay, I say the competition can “Chalk it up”.

I was also sorry to see Liu Xan (hopefully that is the correct name) pull out of the 100m Hurdles with an achilles injury. I was looking forward to that one as well.

Believe it or not, I haven’t been able to catch the US Men’s BBall Team yet. Thank goodness for TVO!

    C-ya Cuz

  7. No joke, I enjoyed the women’s high dive last night. Gou Jingjing of China did a phenomenal job. Obviously, I catch the men’s basketball team when possible, but those early start times do not work well with my work schedule. I did enjoy handball when I caught that, though – it’s like my two favorite sports, soccer and basketball, mixed in one! So exciting.

  8. I’ve really taken a liking to men’s handball. I love how physical and intense it is, with so many fouls and diving goals and all that good stuff. Also gymnastics (Nastia Liukin!!) and beach volleyball have been on the top of my list, in addition to the obvious favorites of track and field, basketball, and soccer. I’ve even gotten around to watching some crazy rowing stuff… how do they stay so straight??

On another note, is anyone else’s DVR/Tivo getting eaten alive by these 12-hour blocks of olympics?

  9. Love watching Rudy Fernandez. He is going to be great for you guys next year along with the other additions.

  10. Dude. Did you see Rudy’s sick put back dunk today? Homeboy is gonna straight up kill it in the league. High energy bro. I’m so stoked.

As far as the other events? Well, that gymnastics chick is pretty hot….Alicia Sacramone, the American with the football players neck. Did you see the youtube vid of her knocking that dude out with a punch to the chin? Enjoy.

  11. Channing,

Too much of a good thing with these late night Olympics. I am seriously sleep deprived. My main interest has been hoops both USA and Spain. Rudy has been doing well and I know he will be ready to contribute to the team this season. Can’t believe that I forgot to post that above but like I said I am seriously sleep deprived. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

  12. Channing…Sadly, this is the first time i’ve visited your blog. I’ve been meaning to forever, but keep forgetting it when i’m on a computer. I’ve now subscribed to the RSS thing, whatever that is, so hopefully i’ll be back more often! Love your writing, personality, and your game! As a lifelong Blazers fan, I hope the Blazers keep you around until you are in a walker, and then let you be their TV guy!

On to the subject at hand, my absolute favorite sport in the summer olympics is Team Handball. It is a very low-key sport in the states, so we NEVER field a good team(we’ve NEVER medaled). But, I played a bit in high school and that game is a blast! It’s a bit soccer, a bit basketball, and can get rough like lacrosse. I sure hope it catches on one of these days so i don’t have to stay up until 2am to watch it in the olympics!

  13. I have been staying up til 2 am just to watch Rudy and I think the biggest thing that he will bring to the team isn’t necessarily his scoring or the alley oops but rather the way he moves with out the ball. Once he touches is he either shoots, passes, or drives there is no wasting time there. And if he is weak side he is constantly moving whether to make a screen or draw his man out of the play. People have knocked his defense and granted he can improve in the one on one game but I haven’t seen anybody get into the passing lanes and disrupt thing in the Olympics the way he has. I just want everyone to get in NOW so we can start building that necessary chemistry!

  14. Agreeing with Dave, i love how Rudy moves w/o the ball. totally reminiscent of Reggie Miller when he’s running off of all those picks and screens. Kobe seemed pretty gassed after chasing him for the first 5 min of that usa/spain game.

Swimming has been compelling of course. I’ve also been enjoying the stories of different athletes from all over the world.

  15. Yo wats good frye. U was my man I was tight when they traded u from the NY Knicks. I met ur mother today at 10:30 came to visit ur grandmother. 17. the 20k power walk was quite exciting.

  18. Mr Frye,

I had a friend who said they met you some years back at a bar in Chicago and you told them you were an outstanding beach volleyball player. Any temptation to return to the sand?

  19. 1. seeing rudy posterize DH was pretty nice.

    2. i’m sorry but nbc showed waaaaaaay too much women’s beach vollyball. those girls weren’t even cute!

    3. anyone else find themselves rooting for a major wipeout during the equestrian events? (yeah i watched it, shoot me now)

  20. Joan Wagar and Eric Carlson, A,K,A, Doubleclick and Mrs Dash,( yes those are there nicknames they gave each other.) admited to poisoning me while I was a plasma donor back in 2005.
Eric carlson pedofied me behind prison walls and then framed me as a pedophile on march 26th 2007, I caught the crime on a audio recorder I put in Joan’s purse.
there were people in authority helping them with this and nobody in authority will help they pretend nothing happened and refuse to investigate this.
Eric carlson changed his hair color and his name but this is not hidden, only ignored by the authority’s and media
Im disabled from being poisoned and the hospitals refuse to admit Im poisoned.
My Family is in danger from these people and I have no other recorse but to make these charges public.
