Thoughts on the draft

Well, first of all, I'd like to thank everyone so far for reading my blog and making comments. I really appreciate you taking the time outta the day to read my thoughts.

I'm gonna answer some questions that I've been asked maybe 6,756,434,567,387,634,345 times since the end of the draft. Yes, I'm excited to be playing with Jerryd and Ike; not only because they both will help the team with their hard work and their great attitudes, but because they're from Arizona (Arizona State, I really don't claim, but Ike is the only exception).

I feel like we made some moves to make our team better in the draft and that everyone has been working out extremely hard even now to prepare for the long road next year. I can't really set goals for the team without being held accountable, but oh well, this year we need to make the playoffs. We have a playoff-caliber team.

With all the pieces we had last year and the new pieces we have this year, we are definitely making moves to become a very, very good team. The only thing I would say is to stick with us through the hard times because of the new players that we have, it's gonna take us some time to get used to each other and used to the rotations and how fast or slow we can play.

But once we get that going, we are going to be a very well-oiled machine and very hard to beat. I don't know what KP is going to do during the off-season, but i think eeryone knows that he's making the best decisions for the Trail Blazers and has been.

  1. Yeh, sad to see Jack and even McBob move on, but hopefully Bayless lives up to the top-5 prospect billing he had coming into the draft. Even more so, I sincerely hope he fits into the Blazer culture.

  2. Channing, thanks for representing Blazer Nation so well. I’m excited to see the new guys this year but I’m just as excited to see what you’re gonna bring to the court this year as well. You’ve been a great addition to the team and I can’t wait to see year two of Frye in a Blazers jersey. Best of luck to you and the team!

  3. I’m really excited to see a more up-tempo pace from you guys this year. With your ability to finish in transition along with LA, Oden, Bayless, Martell, Travis, Rudy, et al, you’re going to be a VERY fun team to watch!

Oh and by the way, thanks for bringing a true sense of class back to our Trailblazers. We’ve been lacking for years and with you and the other current Blazers it makes this Blazer fan very proud of you – regardless of the score at the end of the game. Keep it up!!!

  4. Thanks for giving us your insight on the draft – I think you guys are going to do great things in the near future. You are a great guy and a great player and I’m so happy that a guy of your caliber is playing for the Blazers.

  5. Its going to be great to see 2 St. Mary’s grads assist eachother on the pro level. Good luck to both of you…….

  6. It’s so cool you’ve kept this blog up and active, Channing. You do represent Blazer Nation well and I’m very excited to see the progression in both your game and the team’s overall game next season. I agree, you are definitely a playoff caliber team and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see you go into the second round or more. I’m 31, an Oregon native and lifelong Blazer fan (yes, I was born during the 76-77 season – I was two months old when they won the Championship and I’ve been patiently waiting for another one). I’ve never been this excited for a season to start. Ever.

  7. And that is saying something for someone that used to be a courtside waiter at the Rose Garden working behind the Blazer bench for four years.

  8. HEYY CHANNING, I JUST WANTED TO SAYY THAT I CANT WAIT TO SEE ALL OF U GUYS PLAY NEXT YEAR WITH ODEN,ROY, LA, AND YOU KNOW EVERYONE ELSE. I THINK THAT THIS IS THE BEST YOUNG TALENT PUT TOGETHER EVER IN HISTORY. [SERIOUSLY] AND I HONESTLY THINK THAT AFTER THE FIRST YEAR OF YOU GUYS GETTING USED TO EACHOTHER THAT YOU WILL ALL WIN A TITLE. AND I THINK THE BLAZERS WILL HAVE AT LEAST 4 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS. OOH YAH, BY THE WAY I THINK THAT YOU ARE A REALLY GOOD BACK UP TO LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE AND THAT YOU TWO WILL DOMINATE ALONG WITH GREG ODEN. AND I THINK IF WE DIDNT HAVE LAMARCUS YOU COULD POTENTIALLY BE AN ALL STAR CUZ I SAW THE LAST GAMES YOU HAD WHEN HE WAS OUT AND YOUUUUU PLAYED GREAT!! ALSO… IM LIKE OBSESSED WITH THE BLAZERS AND IM ONLY 14. HAHA. ANYWAYYYS. TTYL

  9. Hi Channing,

Great to read your thoughts on the draft and all things Blazer. Your blog always makes me smile. So thank you for your terrific blog. Your enthusiasm for life and natural curiosity are quite entertaining. One classy Blazer, Channing Frye. Anyway, we love you in Eugene. Have a fun and relaxing summer. Go Blazers! Go Cubs!

  10. Hey Channing

I was wondering what your opinion on Jerryd’s potential is. Do you think he has the potential to eventually be a CP3 type point guard? I’m really glad Blakey stayed and I support the notion of him starting this year, but I would also like to see Jerryd’s full potential unleashed in the starting lineup somewhere along the way.

Enjoy the rest of your time off, you guys deserve it.
    Nate

  11. Hey Channing,

I just wanted to thank you for putting up a blog and representing the blazers so well.

Your blog is a fun read, and I having a feeling you’re going to have a good year on the court. Please keep posting after you’re an all star…

  12. Sorry to nitpick, but if you’ve been asked 6,756,434,567,387,634,345 times “What do you think of the draft?” and it took 1 second to ask the question, that works out to just under 215 billion years just to hear the question, not counting any time to answer.

  13. ^^^^^should be banned.

  14. As all the others above have said, we’re really lucky to have such a classy dude on the Blazers. I was really happy to see that KP didn’t do any wheeling and dealing that sent you anywhere; I’m anxious to see what kind of damage you and LaMarcus are going to do, getting to play your true position of PF next season.

As for the draft, I can’t believe how many young guys are going to be on the roster next season; lots of potential, but I’m sure there are going to be some growing pains as everyone gets settled into their respective roles. Not too worry, here’s one fan who won’t worry too much as putting unrealistic expectations on Rudy, Jerryd, Greg, and Nicolas too soon is only going to be counter-productive.

Anyway, hope you get to enjoy the rest of your off-season Channing.

  15. This team looks great. I love the Pac-10 feeling of this team. Hope you carry that crazy finish of last season through this year, Channing. And keep the Channing Frye show fresh!

  16. Channing,
I dont post..actually at all..lol but I wanted to say you are a reminder of “Arizona” to me, I lived in Phoenix for 5 years attending Arizona State University receiving my MS in urban planning. Since you came from New York, and played this last year with the Blazers…and I agree with a few people above, when you started or not, you played some really good games. I think your the “darkhorse” of the blazers. I probably am imagining that you have been working out, practicing your shot and going low on the post. I believe once the ball is in your hands, your going to start showing the Blazers and the league that your not one to be messed with. Keep up the practice, and if you have time, (maybe your all ready doing this) work on those 3 point shots. Keep up the good work, you are my Arizona reminder, makes me feel at home..lol Thanks Channing..keep up the good work dude..totally!

  17. Channing, we love you man, and are very happy to have you and all the other players that KP has chosen to be a part of this class-act of an organization. The Portland Trail Blazers and fans are a family. I live here in Sidney, Ohio and am a very big fan of both the Trail Blazers of the past, present, and now with the future that looks so bright. TY for this site and for allowing us the privilege of posting here. My mom got Bill Walton’s autograph when she worked at Good Samaritan Hospital and I’m deeply thrilled she got the chance to talk to him and comfort him when he found out about his leg. It was a dark time in Blazers history when that happened. But through the darkness and the light, we remain a family. TY for being a Portland Trail Blazer my mother would’ve been proud of.

  18. Channing please lift weights.

  19. Hi Channing,

A lot of Blazer fans though Jarrett Jack had the best butt on the team. Who has the best butt now?

    Thanks,

    Tom

  20. Love the team going into the year! We are stacked 2 deep+ at all positions. I hope KP and Co. are done for the offseason, with possibly Petteri making the 15th slot. Let you guys gel and make the run for the playoffs.

Channing- are you going to Vegas to support the guys playing in summer league?

  21. You are the MAN! I agree with many of the post. BUT I want to know when WHEN will the BLAZERS sell YOUR JERSEY??? I am waiting….my whole family is waiting..

  22. Channing:

I was a BCP student and you were two years older than me. I’ve always been a fan since you dropped a monster game on the broncos in our own gym in what I think was your Junior year.

My question for you is whether or not you enjoy networking with other Athletes?

I don’t hear about athletes networking too much, and I don’t know where they even do it besides charity events and on off-days on the road.

One place I know that rocks for multi-sport networking is at Athletes Performance, down on the ASU campus. Do you ever work out there in the summers with McNabb and the boys?

Thanks, and good luck this year.

  23. Yo Chann, just found out you had a blog, you could not be more right about having a team capable of making a playoff run, but with B Dizzle going to the Clipps it just got that much tougher in the deep west. The gimmes are of course SA, the punk ass la fakers, Jazz, Suns. Dallas and Houston you can prob pencil in, also and there is still G state, the Nugs which, as you can see, doesnt leave too much room for other teams. But I got faith and I hope you’ll all be in again early to get some run in and get a jump start on the rest of the west before camp starts. Oh yeah, smack that whinny, punk ass, cry baby kobe right in his mouth, trust me its worth missing a couple games. peace

  24. Nice to hear ur thoughts about the draft. I think next year is going to be great too. can’t wait to see bayless, but I think steve should start. I’m glad you were not traded, cos u r my favorite player.

  25. Cuz,

As I asked you in an “Off-Blog” E-Mail, if Portland turns out to be the Western Conference Champs, and “My Team” turns out to be the Eastern Conference Champs and you wind up playing in the NBA Finals at the end of the upcoming season, then who (whom?) do I root for ? ? ? :-)

Glad to see that you have acquired the richly deserved respect and admiration of the fans in Portland. As you continue to develop, you’ll pick up more fans in the other NBA Cities, including mine ! :-) :-) :-)

    Peace Cuz

  26. when does training camp start?

  27. You should build your strength this summer. You would be a really great big if you had power in the post combined with your nice shots in the mid range. That way we would also have 2 beasts in the front even when L.A. and Oden are on the bench …

  28. Channing,

First of all, whom are these fans whom asked you “6,756,434,567,387,634,345″ times about your response to the draft? Was one of them your fan Blazermaniac Andy? If so, he also has another question for you. What do you see your impact on our team this year? I personally see you playing a good amount of time at the 4 spot and even possibly a little with Oden and Alridge at the same time, can you say “Triple Towers”?! But honestly, have a bang up year and I will win my bet. I bet my friend that you would have the “Breakout” year of the three players we have targeted to blow-up in 08-09. The others being Outlaw and Webster. So, if you can just kick their respective booties into gear, and in the process make an arguement for a starting position (I don’t know if you beat out LA, but make the kid worry about it by hustling everyday ok) I will even buy a “Frye” jersey and wear it to Opening Night! And have you been down to The Horse Brass for a pint? That’s a local legend-spot you need to check out, I reco the Scottish Egg. Trust Me. And go Blazers!

    Blazermaniac Andy

  29. Nice post Channing… thanks for your insight. Keep up the good work on the site, and enjoy the off-season. FYI- you should make it out to the Red Bull Flugtag on Aug. 2nd if you can make it…. CRAZY!

  30. Hey Channing.. f this blog, I think all this good image blazers is a bunch of crap, but it’s all good. I have been a blazer fan since the 2000 series when we lost to the Lakers. That was complete bull! and what I can’t wait for is when you reject Gasol and drain the baseline jumper in the same sequence. That will be the day.

  31. Channing, I just listened to the podcast of your appearance on “Wheels After Work.” Great job as usual. I can’t wait for the season to start. Hopefully the chemistry remains good on the team this year, despite the looming playing-time crunch. I am hopeful that some of the intelligent, high character guys on the team, such as yourself, can help keep everyone on the same page behind the scenes.

  32. Hey Channing,

after traveling back from Arizona the one thing I noticed was the contrast of smells between Arizona and the northwest…

gotta be somewhat eurphoric traveling around so much experiencing the various smells of NBA cities.

  33. James Jones is no longer a BLAZER :( He signed on with Miami,…. They offered him a pretty sweet 5 year contract.. DOES HE REALIZE HE JUST CHOSE $$$ OVER WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
Even though he obviously makes poor decision (leaving the blazers) I’m still gonna miss him.. and I will CHEER for him when we play Miami!! Good Luck James Jones you WILL be missed!!!
