One of my bday presents
OK, I really have to say I appreciated all the comments people wrote in to tell me what I could do for my bday. But the funny thing was I've been to almost all of those places. I've been to the bowling place. I've been to those bars. Renting the Portland Spirit out is for a later party.
I loved the comments though. It shows me that I've still got some exploring to do. And, I'm not gonna go into details, but we did WIG out on my bday. All my friends came out from PHX and we had an absolute blast.
There was one gift that my girlfriend gave me, and just for the people out there, no I didn’t write that last blog about date night for any other reason than just because it was on my mind. My girlfriend is seriously the most confident, independent women I've ever met. To think that she would need me to write her a blog is a little ridiculous. And if you have a comment whether it's good or not, please understand that kids read these blogs. So keep the cussing, and calling me gay, etc. etc. down to a minimum. If you want to cuss, use %&&(($ symbols. Lol.
But anyway, my girl got me the sickest electric guitar and her mom got me a ridiculous amp, so I've been trying to learn how to play guitar. (Yes, I know that I do a lot of things during the summer: fishing, golfing, now learning how to play the guitar but, hey, it keeps me busy.)
I've been watching a lot of You Tube videos on how to play but finally I sucked it up and went and bought a how-to-play-guitar for dummies book, lol. So maybe next year you might hear me play a ridiculous riff on the radio or something, lol.
Ok, enough. I wanted to know who people think is the best guitarist of all time. My personal opinion is Jimi Hendrix; just pure talent, skill, and passion. Who do you pick?

hendrix as well. jimmy page is next.
June 7th, 2008 - 21:50
My vote would go to Hendrix as well, but Hendrix was quoted as saying that a guy named Phil Keaggy was the greatest living guitarist. I’ve never listened to Keaggy’s music, but if Hendrix said that, it means something.

Cuz,
Depends upon the music genre each individual likes. For the Jazz Enthusiasts like myself, I’d hafta go with Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell.

Best guitarist? there’s so many greats. Hendrix is most definitely on the list. but how about: Stevie Ray Vaughb, Clapton, BB King, Robert Johnson. there are so many more, but those are the ones that come to mind first.
June 8th, 2008 - 09:10
Clapton and BB are my personal favs. TO my surprise, both those guys were even better players in person. Such amazing talent!!!
June 8th, 2008 - 12:32
Do you know who else on the team plays a musical instrument? Maybe you guys could start a band! You guys could write this generation’s version of “Rip City Rhapsody” or “Bust A Bucket”.

Duude my bday is in a week and I, too, am going to buy a guitar and try to learn how to play this summer. What type of guitar did you get, and what book did you get to try and learn?
Good luck learnin’ to play!
June 8th, 2008 - 14:32
There have been so many great guitarists throughout history. Some of personal favorites are Django Reinhardt, Hound Dog Taylor, Bill Frisell, Kirk Rundstrom, Jerry Garcia, Marc Ribot, could go on forever. Anyways you should check some of these guys out, all real unique.
June 8th, 2008 - 18:06
is there even 1 kid that reads this blog?
June 8th, 2008 - 22:46
Very nice! I think everyone should learn to play at least one instrument. If you’re interested I can point you to some great resources for learning, great shops, repair people, etc.
ALSO! Your fingers will hurt for a while, but push through, because it’s well worth it.

Hi Fry, Long time reader, first time commenter! haha
Great pick-up on the instrument!! I always encourage the spread of music, i can never get enough! Been playing a long time myself, just dont give up. Take lessons, take lessons, take lessons!!! Get the basics down and a solid foundation under your feet, then the skys the limit.
As for best guitarist: Hendrix is definitely up there, Electric Ladyland is one of favorite albums. Of the guitarists not mentioned, I am going to have to add John Frusciante. That man can play. You probably know he is the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers but he also has an elaborate raw solo discography you should check out. I recommend “Curtains”, best acoustic album on this planet that no one has heard yet
Glad to hear you had a great bday, and ROCK ON!

Wanted let you know if you need a break from Portland head over here to Central Oregon for some of the best fly fishing in the world. The deschutes, Metolius, Crooked, and Fall River all await you. All of these rivers are world renowned for their fly fishing. Have a great summer!!!

Glad you got a guitar man, I taught myself how to play using this website…
but make sure you learn music theory and chord theory at least to a novice level otherwise it won’t make sense to you why you move from chord to chord and why they fit. I suggest just googling music theory. As far as awesome guitarists definitely hendrix, stevie ray vaughn, John Frusciante is by far my favorite guitarist ever (youtube him), josh klinghoffer, omar rodriguez lopez from the mars volta. Keep up the good work man, i’m addicted to your blog. And i’m representing U of A and Phoenix.

Most people that start playing guitar quit fairly quickly because it takes a while to pick up (most people think its easy for some reason) and it hurts the fingers but trust me i started playing when i was 12 and i’m in my twenties now and no matter what is going on in life i always have the guitar to escape everyday life. The best of all time would be Hendrix and Gilmore (Pink Floyd) at least in my mind. Being a ball player you got an advantage because you got long fingers i’ve got the same thing going for me and trust me it helps a ton some of my buddies have no hope their fingers just ain’t cut out for the guitar. Buy a loop pedal when you get a chance it is nice to jam or various riffs i’ve got a Line6 dl4(very nice delay and decent loop pedal).

bro…i dont know how to tell you this any other way…you’re in the NBA…you could probably pay for real guitar lessons and learn much faster than a youtube video or from a book.
you should join a band and put up some songs on myspace…like the glory days of bust-a-bucket
June 12th, 2008 - 10:48
Channing, look up Joe Satriani on the interwebs. Highly respected amongst his industry peers.
June 14th, 2008 - 22:38
Hendrix could definitely wail on the guitar. My favorite is Slash though.
June 24th, 2008 - 17:41
C Frye, you gotta check out the movie Crossroads. Not the $&*!! movie with Brittany Spears but the 80’s movie with Ralph Macchio. It’s kind of slow but there’s a guitar off at the end with Steve Vai and the Devil is involved. Steve Vai is awesome, check him out. All of the best (fastest) players are in Metal. Check out Dragonforce on youtube. There is a video with dueling guitar solo’s that will blow your mind.

Hi Channing,
Way late to this topic, but I did not see Frank Zappa’s name mentioned in any of these posts. Nor did I see Jimmy Page’s name. Of all the guitar parts I’ve learned over the years, these 2 cats have some impressive material that is equalled by very few. They both have dexterity, but their sound is also blues based and dirty. Especially Zappa. Although, Zappa’s music can be challenging to listen to; there are many great guitar moments. Page and his work with Zeppelin are better known and probably easier on the ears. Just my 2 cents. Good luck in the upcoming season!!

Hey Channing!!
Congrats on the guitar. Paul Allen is pretty good, when you see him, that’s definately something you should talk about.
December 13th, 2008 - 09:02
2 words….Carlos Santana.
