Favorites from Portland

Hey, this is a blog about my favorite places to eat, shop, or for stuff to wear from Portland. I wish we had stuff like this in Arizona. I'd definitely support the Phx gear, I just never knew anything like this that was around there.

Oddball Shoes - big man shoes. Best shoe store in the history of shoe stores. If you wear a size 15 or bigger, this is your hotspot. They have a website to order shoes too.

dbclay Wallets - I have about 4 of their wallets. They are unique, tight, and if you don’t have one or are not getting one, you're just not cool. Seriously. Why just have a plain ol' wallet? They have like 300 different types and are always coming out with new ones.

Upperplayground - this store is tight if you love hoodies. I mean, really, if you're into looking cool - really, really cool, yet not too cool that you freeze all the ladies from ya, this is the place to go. They have more than just hoodies, but if you ask my brother, "lonewolf“ Logan, they are a hit with him and every other person who's seen the designs.

Bridgeport Brewery - I know, I know. But seriously, with all the mirco brews in the city, I had to have a favorite one! Seriously, the food there has only one word to describe it: “SCRUMPTIOUS.” So good. And just so you know, the food is good even before you have a couple of beers and even better afterwards. I wouldn’t know from experience, just from friends telling me.

  3. You got a 94% approval rating so far on oregon live. Portland must really love you.

  4. dbclay.com in case everyone was dying for a link.

pumped db clay made the list but nothing was said about magic gardens?

  5. Dude…two words (actually one word twice): Pok Pok. Get yourself some boar collar and spicy wings.

  6. Great blog…very interesting. Keep it up.

  7. Man, that dbclay stuff is great! Thanks for a great season and the 41 wins–thought you finished the year really strong, especially in the last stretch of games vs. the Mavs, etc. and can’t wait for next year

  8. How about a place that is an official Arizona Wildcats alumni sports bar? The City Sports Bar and Restaurant, downtown Portland on 4th & Washington. My brother and buddy owns the place.
Also, we are an official Fighting Illini club too, my alma mater.
Arguably the best game in college playoff history…down 15pts w/ 4 min…well you remember.
Here’s the youtube of the final minutes of the game.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FmrvVQFGFlY&feature=PlayList&p=5D5D7777D23B5E9B&index=8 You surely were celebrating too soon. Good to see you pumped up and glad you w/ the Blazers!

  9. So, are you planning on staying in Portland for the Summer, or go back to AZ? Portland typically has AWESOME summers! If you’ve never checked out the Rose Festival, it is a “must see”!! Have a great summer! I look forward to seeing you on the team next season!!

  10. The City is more like Portland’s official place to get into a fight with some random drunk meathead.

  11. C’mon Casey, The City, like the Blazers, are trying to lose that stigma. That’s almost as low as some East coaster still referencing the JailBlazers.
Funny though, ZBo and Darius used to frequent The City – during our club ours.
We 86′d ZBo and he still cannot figure why.

  12. My favourite thing about Portland is Powell’s bookstore. Full city block, they sell used and new on the same shelf, and the science fiction section has a concrete pillar autographed by anyone who’s anyone in SF.

  13. oh and bye the way the best bbq in portland is clays smokehouse in inner se portland!! it is amazing, ive never had anything that good in my life. Trust me you have to try it.

  14. You tried the new Vietnamese joint – Bambuza – in the neighborhood yet? I went to the sneak preview and the appetizers seemed good…

  15. Mr. Frye

It is awesome to have someone on the Blazers who loves the city as much as we love our team. I look forward to watching you play next year. I recommend checking out Nob Hill on NW 23rd and Lovejoy. It’s a little smoky, but has a nice mural of a college age Peter Jacobson admiring an iron shot. Walton lived close to here.

  16. Be sure to get to a Timbers game if you’re in town. This Saturday evening they take on HATED rivals the Seattle Sounders. Emotions always run a little higher, the refs bring out the yellow cards a few more times and the Timbers Army is extra crazy!!!

  17. Channing – Hillarious blog by the way, and it would appear that I’m not the only one. You got big ups for it (along with your play on the court and personality off it) over at the “You Be The GM” section on Oregonlive. 96% of the people have spoken. It would appear that your “buffet of goodness” is indeed delicious. Chuuch

  18. hey man great feature. check out AVA Roasteria in Beaverton. nice coffee shop, great sandwiches, awesome enviroment.

  19. have you been to McMenamins Kennedy School? got to check that place out too, theres nothing like it.

  20. If you like Upperplayground, you should check out Just Be Toys. And, Diggles told me to tell you that I rule on the drums in RockBand ;)

  21. try chipolte hahahaha.

  22. Channing, you are an amazing personality and I’m glad that you are in Portland. While you are wandering around the state this summer, drop down to Salem and check out the Gilbert House (Lionel Trains and Erector Set).

  23. I think I had a portland encounter with you and your car at the intersection of sw broadway and everett-ish yesterday. I (in a blue cavalier) was trying to wave a black suv with arizona plates through the intersection. I was confused as to what the black suv was trying to do, then I was trying to figure out of if it was Channing Frye. Either way it was awesome and I imppressed my brothers and boyfriend at the resturant.

  24. Oddball shoes and Upperplayground are awesome stores, I am from Portland and I didn’t know about them until my friend Saim from Germany came down and he wanted to visit them because he had heard (all the way in Cologne) that they were good stores. Upperplayground is especially awesome though, they have the coolest shirts i’ve ever seen.

  25. Hey Channing. I just found out about your blog while I was cruising OregonLive, I’m lovin it!

I’ve lived in Portland since I was 10 years old and I’m still finding new awesome shops/resturants/bands here in PDX. Now I can say that a Trail Blazer recommended the place from which I just bought my new wallet! haha

My favorite microbrew in Oregon is Deschutes Brewery. They’ve got a new brewpub opening up in The Pearl on May 2nd, you should go check it out. They have a ton of pub exclusive brews that I’m looking forward to trying out:

  26. Hey Channing,

Nice blog, you seem pretty hip. Saw you out at Henry’s awhile back. You should check out the inner NE side…I think you’d really like Ron Tom’s on E Burnside and SE 6th.

Also, I swear, the best burger in town…Stanich’s on NE 49th and Fremont.

Best teriyaki, Du’s grill on NE 54th and Sandy Blvd.

If ya don’t know, w you know kid!

Also, if you like true old school hip hop (no Top 40 music at all), come through to Someday Lounge on Thursday nights for “The Fix.” Old school R&B favorites as well as some De la Soul, KRS-One. The truest and best DJ’s in the city including my friend and Portland’s own Rev. Shines from The Lifesavas.

Come through and check out those eats, you won’t be disappointed. They are Portland’s finest.

    Do work.
