KJ…for mayor?

Kevin Johnson is running for mayor of Sacramento. This is amazing! I can remember when I was growing up watching him play for the Suns, dunking on Hakeem, getting to the finals, guarding MJ... just a classic Suns player.

Now he went back to his hometown of Sacramento and is trying to run for mayor. I think it’s a great idea. Do I think he’ll actually win this year? Probably not, but at the same time it’s good to see that after basketball people are trying to do different things. I wish him all the luck in the world. Hopefully he’ll make Sacramento a better city because right now it’s on the bottom of every NBA player’s list of road-trip cities.

  1. KJ was great back in the day. I still have his rookie card.

  2. Sacramento is worse than Salt Lake City? Truly?

  3. Uh, at least SLC has some pretty mountains. Now if the players had to make a weekend of it…different story!

  4. it must be terrible for you traveling to sac and having to sit on the bench the entire game.

  5. We’ll toss a note in the suggestion box regarding the discomfort of the visitor’s bench. Two hours on that thing must be rough.

Seriously, Sac’s getting ripped by the guy who went to school in Tucson? Maybe Channing’s getting stopped at the door at Avalon? No ballcaps, man! Buy some slacks!

  6. ziller of sac town royalty hating on channing? lol.

    Sacramento is boring as hell.

imo, salt lake city has better clubs. it even has a gay district that i bet ziller would be comfortable with.

btw, Ziller, your posts on nba fanhouse suck almost as much as the kobe lover, Brett. almost, but Brett just hurts most people’s sensibilities.

  7. Is that because there’s no soul-food in Sac? Hey next time you’re here Channing, have a burger at the Hyatt!

  8. “Sacramento is boring as hell” ?? The only people who say and think that are the ones who have not taken the time and effort to explore the city and what it offers. Open your eyes and expand your horizons a little please. If you actually do you find out Sacramento has a whole lot more to offer than appears at first glance.

  9. Hey, good game today. Frye, you had some excellent first half plays.

Did anyone notice Steve Blake is sporting a starter beard? You should encourage him to keep it growing.

  10. Really? I had no idea Minnesota and Wisconsin had such hot nightlives especially when it’s twelve degrees outside when you visit.

So, what’s the attraction to those venues? More strip clubs? More casinos?

Do tell. Please expand on why Sacramento is the worst city in the NBA to visit.

Good grief, everyone in Sacramento knows you can pick up a couple of attractive women at the Park for a threesome…if you are at least a marginal playa in the NBA.

  11. Goodness, gracious! I hadn’t expected all these responses, especially from all the die-hard Sac fans who I definitely appreciate. It’s JMO, guys.

I guess cause I’m so spoiled by what a tight city Portland is, that when I visit Sac for a day or two, I don’t see what there is to do. But, hey, I’m willing to check things out if you want to send suggestions my way.

Just to be clear though, I don’t go partying when I’m on the road and I don’t go to strip clubs (and I’ve never been to Avalon — what’s that about???)

Anyway, y’all, thanks for the comments. I love hearing from everyone.

  12. A lot of TrueHoop readers obviously. C’mon Ziller, as the maintainer of a blog that is trying to make it you should have been all over this the day it was posted. Piggybacking off of Truehoop . . . for shame. Sacramento is a horribly boring city with no culture or identity. I’m not sure how Channing Frye’s sitting on the bench relates to Sacto being a cultural waste-land but, as is usually the case, the spoken truth strikes a deep nerve and prompts irrelevant and insecure backlash from the offended party.

  13. As the purveyor of the only other Kings blogs I know of, I gotta say bravo man. It’s not just you opinion, it’s everybody outside of Sac’s opinion. It’s a boring town unless you’re really into shopping. Then feel free to visit one of the 50 malls they have.

Past that, unless you want to rent a car (and I suggest against it, the traffic is horrible), there’s really going to be nothing to do within walking distance of the hotel. There’s a Hooters over off of Truxel, but C-Webb’s place is better, just watch what you say around the bus boys.

  14. buddy, Wisconson and Minnesota are states, not cities, try saying Milwaukee and Minneapolis instead.

  15. Just to be clear though, I don’t go partying when I’m on the road and I don’t go to strip clubs — okay, so what do you want to do? Trust me, I lived in Portland too and the two cities are pretty similar. Restaraunts? Museums? Historic siteseeing? What do you want, we got it all. And to the ding dong who posted about SLC and the mountains… dude the Sierras are less than an hour away. No way Sac is worse than Milwaukee, Cleveland, SLC, Charlotte, Orlando, Indy, Portland… Okalahoma City.

  16. Exactly what does Portland have over Sacramento besides strip clubs?

  17. I like Portland better, more gay bars for me to visit.

  18. So yr gonna be in Sac tomorrow night, come out to our show.

  19. Seriously, most Sacramentans are nice people who get a little ticked off when you dismiss their home.

Tell us a little about what you like to do on the road and I’m sure they’ll come up with suggestions.

For the record, it’s a little hard to know what to do in a city where you spend 24-48 hours as opposed to your “home” town where you get to spend more time to find things you like to do.

  20. Wow, I’m not sure why there are two homophobic comments (Gayblazers and Iwilltouchyourblazer), but whatever. Portland is a great city and there isn’t enough space on the interwebs to explain all the reasons it’s better than Sac-town.

I’m glad Frye likes it, since we just posted a big article about how we want him to stay.

    http://blazersog.wordpress.com/2008/03/08/moniker-project-round-3-channing-frye/

I will give respect to all the Kings fans who posted here and say that Kings fans are pretty damn die-hard. The best fans in CA to say the least.

    Good luck, go blazers!

  21. I would suggest the concession stand near section 122, they pour a great lager. That’s where I can usually be found when in Sactown, and seeing as you will probably have as much free time at the game as I normally do, I think you will enjoy it.

  22. I hope you get traded to Sac next year.

  23. Channing,

I think a really cool blog post would be:

What should I do/see while in your city? But make each post specific to the city your team is visiting.

Sorry if this is a repeat, but people need to know what you like to do if they’re going to give you suggestions.

  24. no culture? are you kidding me? isnt sacramento one of the most cultural places in the uS?

  25. Hey Channing, I love what you contribute to the Blazers! Good win tonight. Lets take it down to Sac and keep this nice little road trip going!

We’ll be waiting for you here Saturday night in RRRRRip City!

  26. If you like museums here is a list of 26
    http://www.sacmuseums.org/findamuseum.html

There is also any type of performance you want to see and world class golf.

If you like restaurants there are good ones everywhere Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, il Fornaio, Etc. Etc.

If you are staying a Few Days you can take a day trip to San Fran, Tahoe, Napa, Monterey/Carmel, Yosemite.

Living here is great only 20 rainy days with less than 10 inches of rain, alomst always beautiful weather. Right now it is 72 and Sunny.

Boring people are bored. Think of something to do and I am sure many people can tell you where to find it in Sac. and yes around ARCO arena it is a crap hole you need to get out more.

  27. Channing tells it like it is.

  28. I am a parent, my family participated in the Cfrye Leadership Academy last year! We wanted to post on this blog, well thanks to the mature adults!! remember your not the only one’s viewing this blog! Grow Up! Get a life…now I see why professionals basketball players stay away from the FANS…..Get a Life!

Is their one city that you like over another! So what!!

  29. I’ve lived in Sacramento and Portland, and no offense to you Cali boys and girls out there, but it’s no contest. Sacto is a brown drab wasteland. It has to be the No. 1 city in America for strip malls per capita. And the haze that covers the city is disturbing.

But it’s not Sacramento’s fault. All of the capitals on the West Coast are terrible. Olympia, Salem, Sacramento all stink.

  30. Someone named their child GayBlazers?

That must be a pen name. It must.

  31. People are so rediculous. I love how they are trying to make fun of Channing for “sitting on the bench”. As if that is some sort of failure, the only thing most of these jackals sit is in front of their computer praying for a chance to criticize people in the spotlight.

Channing is a professional athlete and multi-millioniare. I would love have his life, as would anyone else here ridiculing him for “Sitting on the bench”, which is a false statement in itself. Channing was a starter for a while.

ps. I reckognize that you have had to play out of position most of the year. Nate asked you to improve your rebounding, and you did that. You should be getting more minutes. I look forward to next year when you can return to your natural position and do more of the things you excell at…

  32. You poor, pathetic, crying sac fans. Why aren’t you out enjoying your city that has SOOO much to offer instead of wasting my time having to read your nonsense? First of all your city does suck! You know it, your fans on Sactown Royalty know it. Funny all you offer up is strip clubs and you wonder why your city SUCKS!
He never said the people were the worst he said YOUR city was. But judging by your behavior, insecurity, anger, lack of knowledge, immaturity, comments etc…I would say your a close second. You sure haven’t done anything to win anyone over to your city. But thanks for all the attention your giving Channing and the Blazers, keep it coming.

  33. Hey Channing,

Very glad to have you on the team! Also stoked to see how active you are in the community and here online.

So true on Sacto being the best place NOT to visit…the only city I could see taking that crown from them is OKC, cause Oklahoma is BOOOOORING.

My wife has MS and I love that you are helping the cause. Feel free to email me anytime. (Friday the wifey is having our first baby tho…EEK!) I’ve been in Portland since 1990 and it has definitely grown on me more and more.

Keep being real. Most of us respect that way more than being PC.

  34. Please be aware that many readers of this blog are under-age and it is the expectation of Channing and the site administrators that users will be respectful with their comments. While opinions are welcome, any posts that are inappropriate for young audiences will be deleted.

    Thank you.

  35. Channing Frye

You should be so lucky to play for the Sacramento Kings. Some of the best fans in the NBA. Times are a little lean these days in Sacto, but if you are interested in night life the Bay area isnt that far away, and Tahoe/Reno are close too. You have lotsa options here in Sactown. Players come here and stay out of trouble. Perhaps the nightlife isn’t so important to professional basketball players who are committed to teamwork and dedicated to winning. Your attitude and demeanor leads us here in Sacramento to believe that you would not like it here. Please don’t sign or get traded here. Do us a favor……

  36. “Someone named their child GayBlazers?

That must be a pen name. It must.”

WOW REALLY? You think? Wow I had never thought of that dude. I thought my name was really GayBlazer. I’m glad you were able to set me straight there buddy.

like I said, Portland has more gay bars and I love it here.

  37. im sure portland is soo much fun..everywhere you go, everyone talks about how cool and exciting PORTLAND is…

  38. you say portland is better than sac? thats like saying your the fastest runner in the special olympics….yea you have so much to offer, you get th watch your team in the playoff this year and we dont…OH WAIT.. well at least you have lots of championships and we dont too right…OH WAIT AGAIN..looks like Portland sucks too. houses are so cheap there cause no body wants to live in your boring town/state..

I couldn’t have said it better.

  40. ill copy and paste the same thing too..

  41. Channing, you’re awesome, your blog is great, and I love how you tell it like it is. Also, I hope some of these cats really do convince everybody in Sacramento that Portland sucks. Nobody move to Portland! It’s a horrible place!

  42. yea horrible.. thanks for the easy game tonight. the kings needed another day off

  43. Seriously, Sacto guys? He said Sacramento was “on the bottom of every NBA player’s list of road-trip cities.” He didn’t say anything that should have your panties in a bunch. Questioning Channing’s abilities? Have you seen the PFs on the Kings roster? Can you name one? Me neither.

  44. I write-in vote Ron Artest for mayor of NYC each year but he doesn’t ever seem to win

    - Jeff

  45. i love Portland
    yizzurr!!!
joell83 who u trying to convince?
don’t hate on Portland cuz ur city sucks
and yo i wish houses were cheap up here…
homeboy don’t know what u talkin about

  46. its got a bigger population then Sacramento too

  47. Portland… beautiful, entertaining, great city

Sacramento…UHHHHHHHHH…???????…..capital of california…thats all i can think of

  48. I’ve been in a touring band for a couple of years and we always hate playing Sac worse than any other city. I got nothing against the people, but I have never had a good time there.

Keep up the good work man. You guys revived my love of basketball this year. I’m proud to live in this city and have such a great bunch of guys representing us.

    -Scott

  49. Channing I guess you were right about sacremento! You’d think they would try to catch the mice or send the homeless to some shelters knowing you were coming to town. Anything to prove you were wrong. Instead it just proved your point!

Joell83- Your right, everyone does talk about how aweosme Portland is that’s why californians are all moving this way.
Keep posting, your brilliance is overwhelming!

    Channing love the blog!
