KJ…for mayor?

Kevin Johnson is running for mayor of Sacramento. This is amazing! I can remember when I was growing up watching him play for the Suns, dunking on Hakeem, getting to the finals, guarding MJ... just a classic Suns player.

Now he went back to his hometown of Sacramento and is trying to run for mayor. I think it’s a great idea. Do I think he’ll actually win this year? Probably not, but at the same time it’s good to see that after basketball people are trying to do different things. I wish him all the luck in the world. Hopefully he’ll make Sacramento a better city because right now it’s on the bottom of every NBA player’s list of road-trip cities.

  1. Channing – Read you were looking for a good steak. Check out Chops at 11th and L or Mason’s at 15th and L. (I personally like Mason’s)

  2. Did somebody just pass judgment on Tucson, the land of booty shorts and unending sway. Don’t hate the epicenter of physically perfect females because your daughter wouldn’t crack the 2nd team of the rugby club teams groupie squad.

  3. This is the blog Sacramento is bashing! Wow Channing, amazing what pull a visiting player’s opinion has on their fans. Im a Portland man and I like to go and watch the game, but that must not be stimulating enough for some Kings fans. Don’t hold back Channing. This is your blog and are entitled to every thought you have. Shame on those you criticize independent thought.

  4. Joell83,
Portland owns the longest streak of consecutive playoff appearances in the NBA. Hmm, how many does Sac have?
Oh yeah, and we also have a championship. Again, how many does Sac have? GO CHANNING AND THE BLAZERS!

  5. Hey Channing!
I was born and raised in Sac-town, but have been in the Rose City for over 12 years now. I was rather surprised & revolted by your movie experience. I’m sorry you’re only seeing the bad parts of the city, that honestly, could be any one you visit. Parts of it are rather pretty, although it’s seriously hurting due to the economy and housing crunch. But, like Portland, it has pockets of trash. I’d really like to suggest you go to Rick’s Hacienda for the best mexican food ever. It’s my absolute favorite. It’s in an older, run-down part of town, but the food is amazing! It’s not too far from downtown!
    Rick’s Hacienda Restaurant
    3330 Fruitridge Rd
    Sacramento, CA 95820-4744
    916.428.1344
Again, you have to know where to go in any city, otherwise, you won’t see the good parts! It’s not all McDonald’s and Denny’s like some joker above suggested.
    Go Blazers! ;0)

  6. Come on Channing was that as bad as getting your asses handed to you by the Kings? Welcome to the new america (thanks to the Bush administration survival of the fittest)

  7. Okay now IMO, I believe that the Rose City is a lot better than Sacramento. If you look at downtown at night it looks VERY nice. In Sacramento, I know it is very dull. There’s only one building that tries to keep the skyline look vibrant, but it only has a darkish blue lighting. I live in Sacramento, but when went to Portland, it looked a lot more amazing that Sacramento. I see why Sacramento is trying to make their riverfronts look similar to Portland.

  8. You told Bee writer Sam Amick that you’re looking for a steak place in Downtown Sacramento. Here you go:

    Steak places Downtown:
The Broiler at 12th and K
    Chops at 11th and K
    Mortons at 5th and L

Other places you can get a good steak:
Esquire Grill at 13th and K
    Spataro at 14th and L
Dawsons in the Hyatt at 13th and L
McCormick and Schmick at 11th and J
The Firehouse at 2nd and K in Old Sacramento
    Mason’s at 15th and L
    Ella at 12th and K

That’s TEN places, eight of which are within a few blocks or of either the Sheraton or the Hyatt, where I’m guessing you guys stay. There *are* things to do in Sacramento, my friend.

  9. Channing if you like a good “home cooked meal” checkout the Cricket on Auburn Blvd not far south of Madison Ave, great food (large portions!:-) and friendly staff especially for breakfast. I can’t offer an opinion of Portland having never stopped there except to pick someone up from the airport. A few other things about Sacramento apart from the culture aspects someone above mentioned Sacramento has a great music scene and I have to agree with the person who mentioned the world class golf :-)

  10. HEY OREGON IS THE COOLEST!!THERE TEAM IS ALSO REALLY GOOD.HOW WAS THAT TOP DRAFT PICK OF YOUR?? OH YEA…SMART DECISION. GOOD LUCK IN THE PLAYOFFS TOO…WHOOPS SORRY AGAIN. LOOKS LIKE YOUR STREAK OF PLAYOFF APPEARANCES IS GOING TO END..ITS REALLY AN IMPRESSIVE STATISTIC THOUGH.

  11. AND WOW YOU WON A CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE 70′S?? IF I WASNT SO BUSY EATING MY OWN BOOGERS BACK THEN I WOULD CARE..

  12. joell83 u have such a way with words……..

  13. where else can you live where you can travel North,East,South & West and have something to do. and then when it is all said and done you can come home to peace and quite. It is already a fact that we have the best NBA fans in the league just go to the game it speaks for itself. No matter where you live it can be boring it all how you make it. if you are a dull person then you get what you get other wise have fun. it’s all what you make it.
